The long-running Emre Can contract saga seems far from ending soon as the Germany international is still undecided over his next move.
Contrary to the rumours suggesting a move to Juventus is certain in the summer, the 24-year-old midfielder revealed earlier this month that he has not signed a pre-contract agreement with any club and his representatives are still in talks with Liverpool over a possible renewal.
Juventus have not kept their interest in Can a secret as CEO Giuseppe Marotta has been continually outlining their intent to sign the former Leverkusen man since the past few months.
Marotta, though, has now admitted that the Serie A giants are far from being the favourites to land the Germany international at the end of this season and that he could sign a new contract to stay at Anfield beyond the summer.
“The interest is clear. We want to try and bring him to us, but we cannot do it because he currently has a contract with Liverpool,” Marotta told Premium Sport (via the Irish Independent).
“He could renew it and, moreover, there are other teams interested in him. We want to try and bring him to Turin. I am stating this with full awareness that he might not arrive, but we need to have important objectives.”
Now that Schalke star Leon Goretzka has decided to join Bayern Munich on a free in the summer, tying Can down to a new deal has now become even more imperative for Liverpool as if he leaves, they would have to spend a fortune to find an able replacement.
Moreover, after Philippe Coutinho’s departure in the middle of the season, losing another key player within a span of just 6 months could prove to be more damaging than it actually seems.
