Emre Can’s latest comments suggest that he’s still undecided about his future and could sign a new deal with Liverpool despite the long-running interest from Juventus.
In contrast to recent rumours, Can has confirmed that he has not signed a pre-agreement with the Seria A champions and the Germany international, whose current contract with Liverpool expires in the summer, is still in talks with the Reds over a possible renewal.
Notably, the disagreement between Liverpool and Can is apparently because the player’s representatives want a release clause if the 23-year-old signs an extension.
“My agent is looking after everything but I am here until the summer,” the former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder said (via the Guardian).
“I haven’t signed anything with anyone. I am talking with everyone. Of course, I am talking with Liverpool. Why not? I still have a contract here. It is an amazing club.
“What can I say? My agent does the rest. I just concentrate on the scene, on my performance and the football. I will give everything for this team.”
Can has had a somewhat average season so far but his performance against Manchester City on Sunday is the evidence that he’s clearly our best holding midfielder and Klopp apparently knows that.
While losing a young talent like Can would be a big blow for us, losing him for nothing would definitely be counted as a huge financial blunder.
If Liverpool fail to convince Can to stay beyond this season, though, they will need an able replacement and it seems Klopp is keen on signing Schalke’s Leon Goretzka who is in a similar situation to that of Can.
Goretzka, who is also strongly chased by Bayern Munich, will make a decision on his future before the end of this month.
