Lazio have reportedly offered £5m for Lucas Leiva who is set to leave this summer after spending 10 years on Merseyside.
It was reported earlier this week that the Reds were in talks with Lazio for the Brazilian and their two central defenders Stefan de Vrij and Wallace.
While Liverpool could wait until late August to know if they can get top defensive target Virgil van Dijk this summer or should they look at alternatives, discussions seem to have progressed well between the two clubs for the Brazilian as the Serie A side prepare for AC Milan-bound Lucas Biglia’s departure.
Lucas, who was signed by Rafa Benitez from Gremio in 2007, is contracted until next year with the Reds. The 30-year-old has also been attracting interest lately from former managers Rafa Benitez and Brendan Rodgers as well as Premier League debutants Brighton.
The Brazilian’s departure will leave us without a first-team defensive midfielder but Jurgen Klopp is apparently not looking to sign an out-and-out number 6. The German prefers dynamic central midfielders over midfield destroyers in his team and Liverpool’s strong pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita is a proof of that ideology.
Though not seen as a direct replacement of Lucas, Keita’s last season’s stats prove that he will improve our midfield both in terms of creativity as well as defensively.

Things are seemingly moving fast now regarding our pursuit for the Guinean as rumours have been growing that RB Leipzig could reconsider their hard-line stance after rejecting a €65m offer for the star.
It is believed that the German club’s hierarchy may not be as strong-willed as sporting director Ralph Rangnick and an improved offer from Liverpool could force them to sell.
Do you think Klopp should also sign a recognised defensive midfielder this summer?
