Liverpool’s top summer target Virgil Van Dijk is said to be looking to force his way out of Southampton in order to join the Reds this summer, according to The Mirror.
Rumours have been growing that Merseyside rivals Everton are readying a mega bid for the Dutch star but the report claims that the centre-back only wants to join a Champions League club with the Reds being his favoured destination of all.
Liverpool publically declared to withdraw their name from the list of the Dutchman’s suitors recently ahead of the fears that Southampton could get the Reds in trouble by reporting them for illegally tapping up their player.
Chelsea and Manchester City were also strongly chasing the defender but it is believed that their interest has cooled off lately after it became public that the player has chosen Liverpool over their rivals.
While many believe that the Reds would not rekindle their interest in the 26-year-old following the ugly saga, some recent rumours also suggest that Jurgen Klopp has still not given up on Van Dijk and the player remains Liverpool’s top defensive target.
While the south-coast club are believed to have promised new manager Mauricio Pellegrino that none of their top players will be sold this summer, there is a lot of time left in the window and the Saints will have no option but to cash in on the disgruntled star if he hands in a transfer request.
