Xabi Alonso has won almost every major title at club level as well as international level, but the former Liverpool midfielder still repents for some of the rare failures in his illustrious career.
While talking to The Times, Alonso revealed that missing out on league titles with Real Sociedad and Liverpool after coming so close and not winning the Champions League with his current club Bayern Munich are his three regrets of his otherwise sparkling career.
When asked about any regrets from his career, the 2010 World Cup winner replied: “Maybe I have three.”
“With Real Sociedad, my club, we were one game from winning La Liga (in 02/03 season). With Liverpool, we were so close to the Premier League (in 08/09 season). With Bayern, so close to the Champions League.”
Alonso, who has won 17 major trophies with club and country, will retire from professional football at the end of this season.
Alonso’s departure from Liverpool was one of the biggest mistakes of Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool career as the midfielder revealed after leaving the Reds that Benitez wanted to axe him for Gareth Barry which forced him to leave the club for Real Madrid the following season.
Benitez’s decision eventually backfired and the former 2005 Champions League winner was sacked after finishing seventh in the Premier League in 09/10 season. After eight years of Alonso’s departure, Liverpool have still not found an able replacement for the Spaniard and it would be interesting to see how Jurgen Klopp fares in the transfer market to bring the creativity back in the midfield.
Do you think Liverpool still miss Alonso’s creativity and intelligence in the central midfield?
