Liverpool already have a host of key players missing for the last few months and it seems that the Reds’ injury problems are not going away anytime soon.
In his press conference, Jurgen Klopp revealed that as much as three defensive players are doubtful for the Crystal Palace game.
“A few things from the last game, muscle problems for Joel Matip, a little bit with Lucas Leiva, still a problem with Ragnar Klavan,” Klopp said.
“It was a very small ligament [issue for Klavan], really small but could not be enough time for Palace. It will be interesting.”
If Matip doesn’t recover in time, Joe Gomez is likely to start alongside Dejan Lovren. The 19-year-old recently recovered from a serious knee injury and has not made a single appearance in the Premier League this season.
Adam Lallana, who has started training after missing four games due to a thigh injury sustained while on international duty, is recovering well but is also a doubt for the game against the Eagles.
It was feared that Roberto Firmino, who trained away from the rest of the team earlier this week, could miss the Palace game due to fatigue, but Klopp is confident that the Brazilian “looks good” and will be ready to play.
Jordan Henderson is also not expected anytime soon as Klopp admitted that he is unsure if the captain will return before the end of the season.
“Still nothing new [regarding Henderson]. I don’t know, we will see,” Klopp said.
“In this moment he cannot really train. We have to wait for this moment. If there’s something else to say about this I would say.
Liverpool now have theoretically easier fixtures left in comparison to their top four rivals but fresh injury blows have again made the route to the Champions League difficult. Jurgen Klopp has a very difficult task in hand to carefully manage an extremely thin squad at his disposal currently.
Do you think young Joe Gomez can handle the responsibility at the back against Crystal Palace?
