Liverpool’s defence may still look unsettled, but it has started showing considerable improvements now. Dejan Lovren, who had a very difficult start at Anfield, is now gaining confidence and looks more comfortable alongside Joel Matip than any other defender he has played alongside at Liverpool.
When Jurgen Klopp signed Joel Matip for free last summer, there were doubts whether the former Schalke man will be able to improve a shoddy Liverpool defence. But Matip has quickly established himself as the centrepiece of Liverpool’s backline and has shown why he is so highly regarded by Klopp.
Matip has settled very quickly in Liverpool’s starting eleven and the former Schalke defender is now setting his sights on winning some silverware with the Reds.
In an interview with SPORTBILD, the lanky centre-half revealed his desire to win trophies with the Reds and also credited manager Jurgen Klopp for instilling a constant will in the team to improve.
“Of course, I dream of the biggest success. I want to be a champion with Liverpool,” Matip said.
“There is no standstill here. The coach always finds points that we can optimise. He is constantly trying to make us better. And that’s what he can do.”
Matip has been Jurgen Klopp’s number one centre-back choice right from the start of the season and it could be possible that the Cameroonian will be pairing with Virgil van Dijk next season.
The Reds are said to have made the Netherlands international their number one target for the summer and may have to spend Southampton’s asking price of £50m for his services.
Do you think a centre-back pairing of Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk will finally solve our defensive woes?
