Liverpool’s biggest area of concern for last few years has been their inconsistent defence. The Reds have scored the highest number of goals this term but have again failed to challenge for the title. Jurgen Klopp’s priority for the summer would be to sign a world class defender and several big names have been linked.
Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk is rumoured to be Liverpool’s prime target for the summer. The Dutchman is also being chased by a number of other big names including Chelsea and Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp may have to look somewhere else if the towering defender decides to sign for our rivals.
Swedish newspaper Expressen is now reporting that Liverpool are among a host of Premier League clubs interested in Leeds United centre-back Pontus Jansson. The report claims that apart from Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea, Southampton are also courting the Sweden International as a replacement for the outgoing Virgil van Dijk.
Jansson joined Leeds United on loan from Torino last summer and has been fantastic for the Peacocks, who are in contention for a Championship playoffs place. The 26-year-old, who is valued at around £10m, is a hard tackling defender and is also very good in the air.
While Liverpool are expected to sell Mamadou Sakho this summer and will demand around £30m for him, signing Van Dijk will be very difficult for us given the magnitude of competition for the former Celtic defender.
Do you think Liverpool should go all out and sign Van Dijk instead of looking at cheaper alternatives like Pontus Jansson?
