The end of the season this May will mark 27 years since Liverpool won the English title. The Reds have had come very close to winning the Premier league on more than one occasions in recent past, but every time the team lacked the cutting edge needed for winning the league.
While FSG, in their 7 years as the owners, have done nothing spectacular in terms of ‘net spent’ in the transfer market, the team has considerably improved since their arrival despite their overly criticised money-ball approach.
With Klopp at the helm, Liverpool find themselves virtually in a similar situation where United were in the late 80s, ever so improving but still not there. The team is not dependent anymore on just one or two stars, which had been the case before Klopp’s arrival. Liverpool are now a team with goals coming from all the areas and everybody needs to be contributing in defence as well, though the latter needs a big improvement in the summer.
Klopp will try to build on the structure he has developed and will surely need necessary reinforcements this summer for the same.
Here are the 5 players who might help the German to take the club back to its glory days.
The France forward has been scoring goals on regular basis for Lyon and is one of the most sought after strikers in world football today. Lacazette is not just a goal poaching centre forward but also adept in playing as a false-nine in Liverpool’s current system. The 25-year-old has scored 29 goals in all competitions this season so far for Lyon. Liverpool will face fierce competition for the forward and may have to spend in excess of €40m for his services but the striker is worth every penny of that amount given his scoring record and Liverpool’s lack of options in the centre forward position.
Despite Liverpool being the top goal scorers so far this season in the Premier League, the Reds’ lack of enough wide players in the attack has cost them on several occasions lately. The inability to stretch defensive teams has forced them out of the title race and the weakness needs to be addressed this summer.
Christian Pulisic has been linked with Liverpool ever since Klopp, his former manager, joined the Reds in the latter half of 2015. The 18-year-old is highly admired by Klopp who signed the teenager from Pennsylvania Classics in Feb 2015. Pulisic is a skilful player who can play on either wing and as a number-10 too. Liverpool need a dynamic and pacy attacker like the USA international who can adapt according to the type of opposition and their style of play.
While it could be difficult for the Reds to lure the teenager away from Westfalenstadion given his recent assertion about his desire to stay with the Germans, lack of game time at BVB could help him alter his mind. Pulisic has a big future ahead and fits very well in the transfer policy of FSG, who are rumoured to be interested in bringing the American to Anfield.
Naby Keita of RB Leipzig was not a known name till this season. Newly promoted Leipzig were undefeated in first 13 Bundesliga games (a record) this term and Keita has been one of their break out players. The Guinea international is a complete midfielder with a mix of good passing, dribbling, shooting, tackling and ball intercepting ability. Despite being played as a number 6 mostly, Keita has scored 4 and assisted 7 in 23 appearances so far this season for Leipzig.
The Reds need a versatile midfielder like Keita who can be their answer to Chelsea’s N’golo Kante. Liverpool are not the only club courting the 22-year-old with Bayern Munich and Arsenal also reportedly waiting to make a move for the player this summer.
The 0-0 draw Liverpool played against Southampton back in November gives good evidence of the Dutchman’s dominance. The centre back did not let Liverpool’s high flying attack settle for a minute and kept Roberto Firmino and co in his control throughout the game.
The 25-year-old is very good in the air and also an excellent ball playing centre half. The defender’s ability has not gone unnoticed as Chelsea are the latest club reportedly trying to sign the centre half.
Van Dijk is one of the best centre back’s in the Premier league and his current market value is around €25m but the defender might cost way more than that given the level of competition Liverpool are bound to face for his signature.
Schalke’s Sead Kolasinac could be a big coup for the Reds if they are able to sign the Bosnian. The full back, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, is currently one of the best left-backs in Bundesliga. Kolasinac is a hard working defender who not only knows his defensive responsibilities very well unlike Alberto Moreno but also helps the team going forward from the left. The former VfB Stuttgart man has scored 3 goals and made 5 assists in 20 games so far this season for Schalke.
Though the player will be a free agent in summer, Liverpool will face strong competition for the full back’s signature. It was reported last week that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola personally went to Germany to persuade Kolasinac to join Manchester City.
Liverpool are preparing for a very important summer transfer window ahead after deciding not to make any signings in January. Jurgen Klopp, who has an enormous task in hand of ending the 26-year-old drought, would know his priorities and areas to improve given the German’s exceptional record with Borussia Dortmund.
