While the midfield and attack need a few adjustments, the defence will need to be completely reassessed. Joel Matip has been a super acquisition last summer and the Reds will need to find him a centre back partner who is as proficient as the Cameroonian.
The 22 year old France international is already an eminent figure in Athletic Bilbao’s defence. Laporte has all the qualities of a world class ball playing centre half. The Bilbao man is strong in the air, reads the game really well, a very good tackler and is a good passer of the ball.
While Barcelona have been linked with the centre back for some years now, it’s Bilbao’s resolute attitude that has stopped any transfer to materialise. Laporte fits the bill for FSG too as he is a young world class talent whose value will only increase with his development.
The Dutch defender after signing from Celtic in the summer of 2015 has established himself as arguably the best centre back in the Premier League. Van Dijk is a well-built centre-half who is very strong in the air and never lets opposition forwards settle in the game.
The 25-year-old is also attracting interest from clubs like Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain and is highly likely to join a champions league club next season. Liverpool were linked with the player in January but the Reds opted not to make any signings in winter.
Leverkusen’s 21-year-old defender is an exceptional talent at the back. Despite such young age, Tah made his international debut against England in 2016 and has already made 21 appearances for Leverkusen this season so far.
Tah is strongly built with a height of 6’3″ which helps him dominate in aerial duels. The former Hamburg defender apart from being strong in the air is a decent ball playing centre back, has a good pace and reads the game exceptionally well.
It’s just a matter of time before the German makes a big move away from Die Werkself and Jurgen Klopp might be looking to bring his compatriot to Anfield.
Out of the 5 centre backs listed, Daniele Rugani of Juventus may probably be the toughest one to get. Italian football is known for producing great defenders and Rugani is another exceptional talent ready to emulate the likes of Fabio Cannavaro and Paolo Maldini. The 22-year-old defender never pulls out of tackles and is a very good passer of the ball. Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri was full of praise for the young defender after his purposeful display in a 1-0 win against Roma in December 2016.
“Rugani played a very important match and displayed great technique and personality,” Allegri said.
“I believe he can improve even further. He also gives a lot of assurances. The national team and Juventus are lucky to have him.”
It would be extremely difficult for Liverpool to secure the young prodigy’s services from the Italian champions but if Liverpool qualifies for the Champions League and Jurgen Klopp being at the helm, the Reds might have a chance.
The 22-year-old who joined Atletico Madrid in 2013 from Danubio is a no nonsense defender who can also play as a number 6. While Gimenez’s passing needs some improvement, the Uruguayan is very good in all other departments. Gimenez is excellent in the air and is a fine tackler too. At such a young age the Atletico man has already made 30 senior appearances for the 2010 World Cup semi finalists. Liverpool desperately need a versatile defender like Gimenez who can also play as a defensive midfielder.
Could Gimenez be the answer for the Reds’ problems?
Or should Jurgen Klopp look to sign compatriot Jonathan Tah?
